CONCEPTUALIZATION OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN QUALITY MANAGEMENT LITERATURE

Zulnaidi Yaacob

Abstract

This paper aims to report the conceptualization of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the literature of Quality Management (QM). In achieving this objective, a group of published articles were reviewed and analyzed to identify the way the authors had conceptualized the HRM construct. Results indicated that there is inconsistency between the authors regarding the conceptualization of HRM in their respective papers. Therefore, the finding of this study implies that the comparison between previous studies, especially in claiming the similarity, consistency, being in line, supporting each other or contradictory of findings between different studies of QM, should be done cautiously. Comparison is perhaps valid only in cases when the conceptualization of construct is found to be consistent. Without taking into consideration the issue of consistency in the conceptualization of a construct, the development of QM as a research area may deteriorate. Therefore, investigating the construct conceptualization provides an interesting path for further exploration by researchers.
